This is the fix for a specific and very common annoyance: foundation that looked perfectly matched at home and looks orange in an office, or eyeshadow that seemed subtle and turns out to be considerably less so outdoors. Bathroom lighting is usually warm and usually overhead, which is the worst possible combination for judging colour.

The three settings

• Warm — evening light. Use it to check how you'll look at dinner or in a bar
• Neutral / daylight — the important one. This is the setting to actually do your makeup under
• Cool — bright office and shop lighting, the least forgiving of the three

Do your base under daylight, then flick through the other two to check it holds up. Thirty seconds of that saves the whole day.

Practical points

It folds flat, so it travels properly rather than theoretically. Touch controls on the surface, USB rechargeable, and it stands at an angle so you're not holding it while trying to use both hands.

Charge it fully before a trip — like most USB-rechargeable mirrors, the light dims as the battery drops, which rather defeats the purpose.

Questions we get asked

Is it magnifying? No, it's a true-size mirror. If you need magnification for brows or lenses, you'd want a separate one.

How bright is it? Bright enough to do a full face by in a dim room. Not a professional ring light — if you're filming content, you want an actual ring light.

Can I use it as a ring light for videos? Poorly. It's designed to light your face for you, not for a camera.

Battery life? Several sessions per charge, depending on brightness.

Is it heavy? No — light enough for a handbag, which is the main reason to choose a folding one over a vanity mirror.
