Let's start with what a hair oil can honestly do, because this category is full of promises nobody can keep.

An oil will not make new hair grow out of a scalp that isn't growing any. What it will do is condition the scalp, soften the hair shaft and cut down breakage — and that matters more than it sounds, because most people who feel their hair 'isn't growing' are growing it fine and snapping it off at the ends. Less breakage means you keep the length you grow, and hair that looks fuller as a result.

What it's good for

• Dry, tight or flaky scalp — particularly in winter or under protective styles
• Breakage and split ends — the actual reason most hair stops gaining length
• Dull, brittle hair that has been through heat or colour
• Retaining length if you're growing your hair out

How to use it

1. Part your hair into sections and apply directly to the scalp — a few drops per section
2. Massage in with your fingertips for two or three minutes. The massage matters as much as the oil
3. Work whatever's left through the mid-lengths and ends
4. Leave for at least thirty minutes, or overnight for a deeper treatment
5. Shampoo out. Once or twice a week

Realistic timeline

Scalp comfort improves within days. Softness and shine within a week or two. Any visible difference in fullness takes three to six months, because that's how slowly hair grows — roughly a centimetre a month — and no product changes that rate.

Will it regrow hair I've lost? No. If you're experiencing genuine hair loss or thinning, that's a conversation with a pharmacist or your GP — there are licensed treatments for it, and an oil isn't one of them.

Is it greasy? It's an oil, so use less than you think. A few drops per section, not a palmful.

Can I use it on colour-treated hair? Yes.

Will it help a dry scalp? That's what it does best.

Can I leave it in? Not on the scalp — wash it out. A drop on the ends can stay.
